Good For Me ("the App", "we", "us") is a native Android app that lets you scan consumer product barcodes and photos to view ingredient breakdowns and safety information. This policy explains what data the App handles, where it goes, and what choices you have.
Plain-English summary first. The legal terms are in the sections below.
- The App runs on your device. Your allergen and sensitivity preferences live on your phone and are never uploaded.
- When you scan a product, we look the barcode up in public ingredient databases. Those lookups send the barcode only — not your identity.
- If the barcode isn't recognised, the App can send the captured photo to Google Gemini to identify the product and read the label. Photos are sent over HTTPS, not stored by us, and handled by Google under Google's privacy terms.
- The App shows ads (Google AdMob) and offers an optional one-time in-app purchase to remove ads and unlock extra features. Billing goes through Google Play.
- We do not sell your data. We do not have a server of our own. We do not require an account.
1. What data the App accesses
1.1 On-device only — never leaves your phone
- Allergen profile. The 12 pre-set allergen categories you've toggled on and any custom ingredient terms you've added live in local storage (Android DataStore). They are used to flag matching ingredients on product screens and to tailor the narrative summaries.
- Scan history and saved comparisons. Products you've scanned and comparisons you've saved to Favourites are stored in a local Room database on your device.
- Subscription tier. Whether you have the free or Premium tier is cached locally so the App works offline. Google Play Billing is the authoritative source and reconciles this on each launch.
- Explicitly excluded from cloud backup. The App's
dataExtractionRules and backupRules exclude the allergen preferences file from Android Auto Backup and device-to-device transfer, so your sensitivity profile does not sync to Google's cloud backup service.
1.2 Camera access
- The App requests the
CAMERA permission so you can scan barcodes or take photos of product labels.
- The live camera feed is processed on-device by Google ML Kit for barcode detection and, in photo mode, for text recognition (OCR).
- Frames from the live preview are not uploaded anywhere. Still images captured for OCR / Gemini are held in memory and recycled when you leave the Scanner screen.
